2011 with the Black Eyed Peas

Especially at the beginning of the year we focus on everything to make us the new year brings as much happiness: Pink Marzipan Pig, horseshoe, chimney sweeps, toadstools ... I do not know about you, but I prefer it when good luck charms are edible. Since many of the marzipan Charms are unfortunately often not vegan (egg white, boo!), Horseshoes and chimney sweeps are not more on my diet and I probably the mushroom could eat only a single time, I have to rely on other delicacies: Black Eyed Peas!

No, not that Black Eyed Peas (which would eat vegan not very well). I mean of course the black eye bean, a legume very tasty! For us it is unfortunately not very popular in other countries such as India or the USA, however it is very popular. It is considered a lucky charm, and one should eat a serving of black-eyed peas on New Year's Day in order to ensure happiness and prosperity for the coming year. But I am sure that the magic beans are not only at New Year ... To give you even use the power of small beans, a tasty recipe. I have learned in the ayurvedic cooking course , and was surprised at how yummy this dish. I have never seen black-eyed peas, canned, so be sure to draw here on the dry version, but this is not difficult. You have to watch only the beans to soak at least overnight. All the ingredients are, for example in the Asia-store or at an Indian specialty store, maybe even in the good sort food store to get!

Lobia - black eyed peas (good luck for 2 persons):

1 cup dried black-eyed beans (1 cup = 1 / 8 liter)
3 cups water
salt
2 tablespoons sesame oil, light
crushed 1 / 4 teaspoon cumin seeds (cumin), in the mortar slightly
1 small onion, diced
some dried (or fresh) Chilli
1 / 2 tbsp tomato paste
1 / 2 - 1 teaspoon garam masala (Indian spice mixture)

Soak the black-eyed beans in some water at least overnight (I had almost a whole day in water). Then pour off (!), Place in a pot with 3 cups water and salt to a boil, shut off the stove and simmer until beans are tender (about 30 to 45 minutes - even faster in a pressure cooker) - there is some water left over, not wegleeren!
Heat the oil in a pan, fry the onion light brown along with the cumin, then garam masala, chilli and tomato paste and continue to fry briefly. These spices give now to the soft cooked beans, if desired, add water yet. Simmer until the sauce is thick (this can take quite noch15 to 20 minutes). Serve with rice or chapati.

I
the beans with spiced rice and Vegetable Curry have combined. The curry was also ewas Mangold inside - green leafy Vegetables, eaten on New Year will bring prosperity. I'm well prepared for 2011!

And because my beans have brought so much happiness, there are now more Totally Veg! for you. I am now represented on Twitter and on Facebook (there are also the current content posted additional)! I hope that even more have more exchanges, and can chat about the wonderful vegan and delicious recipes ... See you there!
